Today in What The Entire Fuck: School Forces Pregnancy Tests on Girls, Kicks Out Students Who Refuse or Are Pregnant
In a Louisiana public school, female students who are suspected of being pregnant are told that they must take a pregnancy test. Under school policy, those who are pregnant or refuse to take the test are kicked out and forced to undergo home schooling.
Welcome to Delhi Charter School, in Delhi, Louisiana, a school of 600 students that does not believe its female students have a right to education free from discrimination. According to its Student Pregnancy Policy, the school has a right to not only force testing upon girls, but to send them to a physician of the school administration’s choice. A positive test result, or failure to take the test at all, means administrators can forbid a girl from taking classes and force her to pursue a course of home study if she wishes to continue her education with the school.
This is in blatant violation of federal law and the U.S. Constitution.

This one goes out to all those people who think that just because discrimination is illegal and this kind of forced invasion of privacy is illegal, that it somehow doesn’t still happen fucking CONSTANTLY.

Eerily reminds me of the Salem witch trials except without the batshit crazy people with sticks and stones, looking for ways to strip the power of freedom from women.

For FUCK’S SAKE.

How is this even legal?

Ossobuco: I don't even know what I'm reading anymore.
A baffling, infuriating trend has cropped up in reviews of The Hunger Games: critics bodysnarking on Jennifer Lawrence. “A few years ago Ms. Lawrence might have looked hungry enough to play Katniss,” writes the New York Times’ Manohla Dargis, “but now, at 21, her seductive, womanly figure makes a bad fit for a dystopian fantasy about a people starved into submission.” The Hollywood Reporter’s Todd McCarthy comments that Lawrence’s “lingering baby fat shows here.” And—most bluntly—Hollywood Elsewhere’s Jeffrey Wells calls Lawrence a “fairly tall, big-boned lady” who’s “too big” for Josh Hutcherson, who plays Katniss’s romantic interest. (In case the message didn’t come through: Wells thinks Jennifer Lawrence is BIG. He also thinks we should be wary of “certain female critics” who “may be susceptible to the lore of this young-female-adult-propelled franchise.”)

Jennifer Lawrence Is Not “Too Big” to Play Katniss (via usakeh)

“if critics are going to pick on a 21-year-old woman for not being skinny enough for a fantasy film, why haven’t they been more consistent in their critiques of actors’ bodies? I haven’t seen much concern about Liam Hemsworth’s muscular frame, even though his character in The Hunger Games occupies the same food-strapped world as Katniss.” (via dupery)

God help us all if this girl is being described as “big-boned” or is being criticised for her “lingering baby fat”.

For fuck’s sake.

(via notnadia)

Oh, fuck you. Classy body-policing; in what kind of messed up world is Jennifer Lawrence considered ‘big’?

(via ofunicorndust)

What the fuck?

I’m reading the books right now and one point made is that Katniss is generally better nourished and fitter than her peers due to her penchant for hunting.  Katniss experiences constant privation, but unlike her District 12 peers, generally isn’t starving, not constantly, not daily.

Did the reviewers read the books?

Do they understand that even a malnourished woman will have body fat until starvation is extreme?

I am a size four, with a genetic disease that makes it very hard for my body to absorb nutrients and calories, and yet I’ve got body fat, enough of it that in our culture I’ve been told to lose weight (from where, my brain?) in order to be a performer. Size 4; 5’6” and medically diagnosed as unable to gain weight and told to lose it.

So Katniss isn’t visually starving enough?  Bullshit.  And really, it’s rather creepy that reviewers are basically demanding that her body (the actress’s body) get around to proving some stuff to them, right now!  Because that’s what woman are for.

And if she were, the same reviewers would say she’s too ugly to be inspirational or some other nonsense.

Finally, while I’m only just into the third book now the starvation of the body is the device that allows the plot of The Hunger Games to exist, but food for the body is perhaps the least of its stories.  Try food for societies and media machines, try the way we chew up celebrities and spit them out, try food for the spirit and for war.  There’s more to nourishment than our flesh, but I suppose those things are never considered when there’s a woman’s body to criticize instead.

I am fucking livid.  Body tyranny is just this universal fucking toxin.

Except you can’t show a topless woman on TV - and you can’t defibrillate a woman in a bra. So victims of heart attacks on TV are *always* male. Did you know that a woman having a heart attack is more likely to have back or jaw pain than chest or left arm pain? I didn’t - because I’ve never seen a woman having a heart attack. I’ve been trained in CPR and Advanced First Aid by the Red Cross over 15 times in my life, the videos and booklets always have a guy and say the same thing about clutching his chest and/or bicep.

And people laugh when I tell them women are still invisible in this world.

re: feministing - for women, heart attacks look different

Things I did not know, but should.

(via elfgrove)

  (via ultralaser)

They put up some awesome billboards in austin a few months ago showing the signs of a heart attack that women will feel. And I know they were effective because I was in the car when mando saw the billboard and said “Man I had no idea women had different symptoms for heart attacks!”

Way to go city of mine :)

Even better?  A woman having all the “classic” (read: male) symptoms of heart attack is more than twice as likely to be sent home from the ER than to be checked out, EKGed, and examined.

Because we’re just hormone-addled hysterics.  :-(

(via undercovernun)

i do not endorse feministing but factual quote.

(via baddominicana)

Let’s talk let’s count all the times that my grandma was having mini heart attacks but they sent her home with a diagnosis of severe acid reflux tho… Let’s count em… three. And this was only discovered after the big kahuna heart attack came.

It’s so aggravating especially in my experience, with what i know about how women in my culture are raised, we tend to be able to tolerate far more pain than men because we are taught to grin and bear it. So they can miss me with the hormonal hysterics BS. This bs is why I am talking to the women in my family about advocating for themselves, and advocating for them until they can for themselves.

On February 26, our son Trayvon Martin was shot and killed as he walked to a family member’s home from a convenience store where he had just bought some candy. He was only 17 years-old.

Trayvon’s killer, George Zimmerman, admitted to police that he shot Trayvon in the chest. Zimmerman, the community’s self appointed “neighborhood watch leader,” called the police to report a suspicious person when he saw Travyon, a young black man, walking from the store. But Zimmerman still hasn’t been charged for murdering our son.

Trayvon was our hero. At the age 9, Trayvon pulled his father from a burning kitchen, saving his life. He loved sports and horseback riding. At only 17 he had a bright future ahead of him with dreams of attending college and becoming an aviation mechanic. Now that’s all gone.

When Zimmerman reported Trayvon to the police, they told him not to confront him. But he did anyway. All we know about what happened next is that our 17 year-old son, who was completely unarmed, was shot and killed.

It’s been nearly two weeks and the Sanford Police have refused to arrest George Zimmerman. In their public statements, they even go so far as to stand up for the killer - saying he’s “a college grad” who took a class in criminal justice.

Please join us in calling on Norman Wolfinger, Florida’s 18th District State’s Attorney, to investigate my son’s murder and prosecute George Zimmerman for the shooting and killing of Trayvon Martin.
